2018: A Year in Review

Dear friends,

As we round out 2018 and ring in the new year in just a few days, we are reflecting on 2018 and our endless gratitude for our community here at The Little Market. Thank you all for your support over the past five years and joining us in our mission to empower female artisans all over the world! Looking back at 2018, we have so many milestones to celebrate. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much for making 2018 another amazing year!

In the 2017-2018 fiscal year, The Little Market ethically purchased more than 50,354 units of product. These purchases have generated approximately 148,085 hours of dignified work for talented, hardworking artisans around the world, from the United States to Mexico, Rwanda to Senegal, and India to Bangladesh. We are actively supporting artisan groups across 28 countries. This would not be possible without your support! Thank you for shopping fair trade, supporting safe working conditions, and voting with your dollars.

Throughout 2018, we began working with 12 new artisan groups. To name a few, we began working with artisans in Madagascar on a new collection of beautiful totes. We spent close to 14 months collaborating with their team on product development and were so excited to share these new designs with all of you! We also expanded upon our basket collection by working with inspiring artisans in Tanzania. Many of them are former refugees and Tanzanian hosts, and they create these baskets while preserving traditional techniques and using natural materials. In the summer, we brought on a new collection of fair trade tea from farmworkers in Kenya, which includes a unique purple tea.

We also added new products to our collection through existing partnerships. A best seller for 2018 was our This is About Humanity Candle, which supports nonprofits working closely to meet the needs of immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers who are affected by violence, poverty, and instability in their home countries. With your help, we have raised more than $20,000 this year. We were so excited to expand upon our collection of PURPOSEfull TOTES as well, from new gift totes to charity totes to wine totes.

One of our most memorable milestones this year was opening our first brick-and-mortar store in the Pacific Palisades. It’s hard to believe it’s already been three months since our grand opening! We are thrilled to have a physical space to showcase these handmade goods and are so grateful to meet some of you in person. If you’re in the Los Angeles area, we would love to see you.

From all of us here at The Little Market, thank you for empowering small-scale producers, shopping consciously for fair trade products, raising awareness for human rights and social justice issues, and believing that everyone deserves respect and dignified income opportunities. Together, we can all work toward a more peaceful, just world. We are so grateful for your support and look forward to all we can accomplish together in 2019!
