Today, we are proud to recognize World Fair Trade Day and celebrate the key principles behind the fair trade movement. World Fair Trade Day is an inclusive worldwide festival of events that celebrate fair trade and the positive impact it has on the lives of hardworking producers around the world.
What does fair trade mean? Fair trade is a global movement that focuses on ethical, environmentally conscious, and sustainable production. It ensures that small-scale producers are supported and paid fairly for their work and the products they create; it also ensures the preservation of important, time-honored cultural techniques.
The Little Market is proud to be a member of the Fair Trade Federation. We prioritize working with artisan groups that practice fair trade principles, which are: to create opportunities for economically and socially marginalized producers, develop transparent and accountable relationships, build capacity, promote fair trade, pay promptly and fairly, support safe and empowering working conditions, ensure the rights of children, cultivate environmental stewardship, and respect cultural identity.
We can all take steps toward supporting the fair trade movement and supporting small-scale producers and their beautiful products. Here are a few ideas below to help you get started!
- Stay informed about fair trade and its positive impact. Share your knowledge and start a campaign to educate others about the importance of fair trade principles.
- Purchase products that are made using fair trade principles.
- Learn about how your products are made and the story behind them. Understand who the producers are, their working conditions, and the process that goes into making the products you buy.
- See if there are fair trade events happening near you, or start your own event to inform your community and spread the word.
Thank you for joining in our mission to support fair trade principles and fair trade products!
