The third fair trade principle is centered around building capacity, which is measured by the expansion of skills and long-term opportunities for artisans. According to the Fair Trade Federation (FTF), building capacity gives way to independence for producers and artisan groups. As artisans preserve their existing skills and acquire new ones, they become more competitive and better equipped for self-sufficiency.
At The Little Market, we are committed to contributing to our artisan partners’ skill development, e-commerce presence, and business savviness. We recognize that one size does not fit all. Therefore, we holistically approach each partnership to ensure that we share lessons learned in a way that is relevant and most useful to each artisan group.
Our partnership with Bright Endeavors showcases capacity built through skill development. The amazing moms at Bright Endeavors have worked hard to perfect our exclusive soaking salts and sugar scrubs. Bright Endeavors “provides a pathway out of poverty for young moms who receive coaching, guidance, and on-the-job training.” In the spirit of building capacity, our teams have collaborated on the development of unique scents and recipes. Through this collaborative effort, young moms working with Bright Endeavors expand their skillset and professionalism, thus preparing to successfully transition into the workforce. At the same time, through the development of these custom products, Bright Endeavors widens the range of its skill training programs.
Our partners at Prosperity Candle have built capacity through the expansion of employment opportunities for more refugee artisans. Since inception, this social enterprise has successfully worked toward the goal of empowering women to escape poverty. Prosperity Candles’ investment in women’s entrepreneurship has increased access to living wages, safe working conditions, and training opportunities for refugee women. In addition to growing its team, Prosperity Candle has promoted artisans to roles with more responsibility. Our beautiful candles, hand-poured by female refugees, are reminders that capacity built flourishes into positive long-term outcomes in the lives of artisans, their families, and their communities.
Purchases of ethically sourced, artisan-made, fair trade items create stable employment opportunities for artisans around the world. Your support allows our partners to expand their operations, recruit new artisans, and whenever appropriate, learn and apply new skills and techniques.
