Meet the Artisans: Meyelo

We are thrilled to introduce our brass collection crafted by artisans in Kenya. Since 2008, Meyelo has partnered with Maasai communities to create sustainable income opportunities in safe and dignified working conditions. More than 80 artisans partake in the maintenance of traditional leather and brass techniques at Meyelo.

Despite the high level of skill and craftsmanship, economic and education opportunities for many of the artisans have been limited. Meyelo provides training programs to help the artisans expand their entrepreneurial skills and understanding of the global market. Furthermore, a portion of the proceeds are reinvested in the microfinance opportunities for the artisans.

Our collection is crafted with brass the artisans locally source. Brass is known for its strength and durability. The artisans trace and cut shapes onto brass sheets and then carefully round the corners. Depending on the girth and intricacy of the shape, the metal might be treated with heat. The brass is hammered into the desired shape and then polished. On average, three artisans collaborate to craft each product.

Brass may naturally oxide or tarnish with time. To help preserve its natural shine, we recommend gently cleaning with brass polish and cloth.
