Meet the Artisans: SAFFY

At The Little Market, we offer a variety of olive wood and acacia wood pieces, from kitchen utensils to serveware to household décor. We are proud to work with artisans at SAFFY on many of the hand-carved pieces in our collection.

SAFFY, a social enterprise based out of the Philippines, works with artisans in marginalized rural communities. SAFFY collaborates with approximately 651 artisans; 446 of the artisans are women.

Most of the artisans are based out of a communal shop, which helps to provide an opportunity for collaboration and interaction. Some of the artisans, especially those who are based out of remote areas, are also presented with the option to work from home. These flexible schedules allow them to tend to household responsibilities while earning a sustainable income for the beautiful goods they work hard to create.

SAFFY artisans implement eco-conscious practices in the creation of each wooden piece. They work with licensed tree farmworkers within the Philippines and are provided with wood that was harvested in a sustainable manner.

An average process to create the wooden items includes initially shaping the piece, allowing the products to dry for several weeks, and then adding lacquer and a top coat.

In addition to access to a sustainable income, SAFFY provides services including skill development and financial management training. The social enterprise aims to build capacity within the artisans’ communities by creating market access and job opportunities. We’re excited to be expanding our collection with SAFFY with pieces including a unique vegetable serving platter, wood plate, and pineapple bowl. To shop the complete collection, visit our site!
