Meet the Artisans: Sidai Designs

Beaded Tassel Jewelry {The Little Market}

We are so excited to announce our newest partnership at The Little Market! We are proud to work with Sidai Designs, an incredible social enterprise based out of Tanzania.

Sidai Designs supports sustainable employment opportunities for Maasai women. Sidai itself means “good” and “beautiful” in the Maasai tribal language, Maa. Two of more than 120 artisans at a time have worked together to create each tassel wrap bracelet in this collection while using traditional techniques. And the social enterprise has grown rapidly. What began as a workshop of five artisans has grown into a studio space of more than 120 women.

Sidai Designs connects with marginalized women, including indigenous populations and survivors of domestic violence. Having experienced social and economic marginalization, they have had limited opportunities for a formal education.

Not only are these women gaining economic independence and confidence, but they are also able to participate in essential decisions in their community.

Purchases of these bracelets not only support the artisans, but also they support the preservation of time-honored techniques. Artisans carefully join traditional glass beads, 24k gold-plated glass beads, and a cotton tassel together to create each piece. Furthermore, the colors are often significant within the Tanzanian culture.
