We are grateful to introduce a new charity collaboration at The Little Market today! The Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) invests in the futures of African youth and their ability to keep themselves safe from HIV/AIDS so they can reach their full potential.
CTAOP’s story begins in 2007. Charlize Theron, an Academy Award-winning actress and UN Messenger of Peace, created the nonprofit organization with a mission of making a positive difference in fighting HIV in South Africa, her home country. South Africa has the largest population of people living with HIV in the world.
CTAOP comprehensively supports its network of Program Partners, which are community-based organizations in Africa, by providing funding, building capacity, and bringing awareness to the work of these organizations. CTAOP’s Program Partners advance the health, education, and community support of young people between the ages of 10 and 20, striving to ultimately end the HIV epidemic and ensure the youth they serve are on a path to reaching their full potential. Programs include sexual and reproductive health education, psychosocial support, life skills, access to youth-friendly health services, and HIV counseling and testing.
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) attacks cells that help the body fight infections. A person infected with HIV is at-risk of other infections, diseases, and infection-related cancers. If it is not treated, HIV can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).
- In 2018, approximately 37.9 million people were living with HIV/AIDS worldwide.
- Each day, approximately 2,600 people will lose their lives to AIDS and another nearly 5,000 will
- become newly infected with HIV.
- Worldwide, approximately 7 in 10 young girls ages 15-24 do not have a comprehensive and correct
- knowledge of HIV.
- South Africa is 1 percent of the population of the world, yet it is home to nearly 20 percent of the population of people living with HIV.
- In 2018, South Africa had 240,000 new infections (highest number in the world), and 29 percent were among young women.
- AIDS is completely preventable.
We have partnered with CTAOP because together, we believe in the importance of compassion, kindness, and taking care of one another, no matter our background or location. For every purchase of these candles, which are hand-poured by women refugees in the United States, and reusable bags, which are handmade by artisan women in rural Bangladeshi communities, we will donate 50 percent of the respective purchase price to CTAOP.
A core value of CTAOP, the spirit of Ubuntu is a South African proverb that means “I am because we are.”
We created the Changemaker candle and canvas bag because we believe each of us can make a positive difference by using our unique voices, empowering and advocating for one another, and serving as changemakers for the greater good.
Thank you for joining us in celebrating our interconnectedness as a global community.
