Recognizing International Plastic Bag Free Day

Earth Small Purposefull Shopping Tote | The Little Market

A key part of The Little Market’s mission is to source, and raise awareness, for eco-conscious goods. It’s important for us to be able to support products that are versatile, can be used more than once and never go out of style, and hold a meaningful value for years to come. This was the idea behind our PURPOSEfull TOTES collection! Today, we want to encourage all our readers to participate in this year’s International Plastic Bag Free Day and extend this sentiment throughout the year.

Hawaii and California are two states that are officially plastic bag-free. This means that grocery stores in these two states no longer carry complimentary single-use plastic bags. Plastic and paper bags are still available in stores, but they are no longer “single-use” and cost 10 cents each. Through these efforts, consumers are encouraged to seek out sturdy, reusable bags.

  • Eighteen million pounds of plastic waste ends up in the ocean each year.
  • Forty percent of all plastic made is only used once.
  • Shoppers in the United States use one plastic bag/per day.
  • Fifty percent of all plastic was made after 2000.
  • Less than one-fifth of plastic is properly recycled.
*According to National Geographic

Since single-use plastic bag bans have gone into effect, San Jose has seen an “a reduction in bag litter of approximately 89 percent in the storm drain system, 60 percent in the creeks and rivers, and 59 percent in city streets and neighborhoods,” according to the City of San Jose December 2012 Committee Agenda. The average person living in San Jose now only uses 0.3 bags instead of three bags per grocery trip, according to the City of San Jose 2013 Final Impact Report. Small lifestyle changes have shown the immense impact each one of us can make by reusing a bag!

Our PURPOSEfull TOTES support the economic prosperity of artisan women in rural Bangladeshi communities. The women implement eco-conscious techniques while using a sustainable jute fabric. Plus, each bag is reusable!

PURPOSEfull TOTES come in five different sizes, black or white ink, and countless phrases, and they feature a water-resistant lining. They can be given as gift bags and later repurposed as shopping or beach bags.
