Recognizing World Homeless Day

Nelson-Mandela-Quote

At The Little Market, our mission is dedicated to supporting dignified income opportunities for individuals in underserved communities all over the world. A core part of our mission is to raise awareness for human rights and to share the meaningful stories behind our products and the people who create them. Here on Cultural Exchange, we share avenues in which our readers can use their voices and actions to help others. We are recognizing World Homeless Day, observed every year on Oct. 10.

What is World Homeless Day?

World Homeless Day raises awareness for the needs of individuals experiencing homelessness and shares how each of us can get involved in responding to homelessness.

It can be challenging to calculate the exact figures on homelessness around the world. In 2005, the United Nations found that there are approximately 100 million people living in homelessness around the world. Habitat for Humanity reported that at least 1.6 billion people did not have access to adequate housing in 2015. Individuals living in homelessness face various challenges including health issues, hunger, poverty, and a lack of access to basic essentials.

According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development defines homelessness into four broad categories: 1. People who live in a place not meant for human habitation, in emergency shelter, or in transitional housing, or people who are leaving an institution where they lived temporarily 2. People who are losing their main form of nighttime residence within 14 days and do not have access to resources to maintain proper housing 3. Families with children or unaccompanied youth who do not live in stable housing conditions and are likely to continue as such 4. People who are fleeing or attempting to flee situations of domestic violence, who have no other residence, and who do not have the means to secure permanent, safe housing.

How We Can Help

We can all take steps to work toward alleviating poverty and ending homelessness.

  • Learn more about homelessness, within your community and globally, and share what you’ve learned with your family and friends.
  • Connect with your local neighborhood and community groups to further increase your reach and impact.
  • Volunteer in and donate to local shelters.
  • Host a local or online fundraiser.
  • Support nonprofits and charitable organizations empowering those rising above homelessness.
  • Join virtual events on World Homeless Day to learn more about the issue and advocate for a solution.
  • Visit our website to learn how you can get involved with The Little Market.

Today, and every day, thank you for joining us in a mission to empower the most underserved, vulnerable communities including those living in homelessness.
