The Story Behind “Coloring Without Borders”

Coloring Without Borders - Families Belong Together

The collaborative coloring book, “Coloring Without Borders,” is now available at The Little Market! Families Belong Together created this extraordinary book as part of its efforts to put a complete end to family separation and end family detention, seek accountability for the harm and struggles families have faced, and promptly reunite families who have devastatingly been separated over the course of 2018.

“Coloring Without Borders” features beautiful artwork and illustrations designed by more than 80 professional artists from all over the world. As part of their contributions, they were to create the piece while leaving space for children to use their imagination and complete the work. The one rule these artists were given was to avoid including any lines or borders.

Families Belong Together explains that the purpose behind the book is to “help children separated from their families at the border to expand their imaginations beyond the walls that confine them and to be a source of empathy and compassion for families that live free of the struggles that migrant families are enduring.”

Families Belong Together consists of about 250 organizations with diverse backgrounds, including the American Civil Liberties Union, National Domestic Workers Alliance, Human Rights Campaign, Global Fund for Children, Women’s March, National Immigrant Justice Center, and Southern Poverty Law Center. They all share a common goal to advocate for human rights, including ending the separations of families. Millions of dollars have been raised for families and children, advocates across the United States have taken action, and thousands of families have been reunited through this incredible work.

Family separations at the border are still occurring today. Since late spring to the middle of August, thousands of migrant children were separated from their families. As of early December, separations continue to be reported. We believe that the issue of family separation is not a political issue, but a human rights issue. It is important that we actively advocate for human rights. Please join us in raising awareness to help bring these families back together and put an end to any future separations.
